WASF was established in November 2012 as a company incorporated under English law and limited by guarantee, with financial support from the Government of Benin and the German Development Cooperation (KfW), and technical support from the IUCN.
It is headquartered in Benin under a host agreement granting it the status of an international organization, including tax exemption, public-interest recognition, and the right to freely transfer and invest its capital and investment income.
It obtained “Charity” status in the United Kingdom on 13 September 2013 under registration number 1153809. The Government of Benin and the IUCN are its founding members.
